Physical Science

The Physical Sciences in the South Atlantic are exciting in that there is very little known and much to be discovered. There has been very little science undertaken either individually or collectively across the islands, and the opportunity that these natural laboratories offer, from the equator to the poles, is incredible.

Aim: In collaboration with partners, we will develop our physical science focus around the study of past and future climate change.

Over the next 5 years, we will establish research programmes to:

  • Promote research into the South Atlantic environments as natural archives;
  • Explore the impacts of climate change on Southern Ocean Productivity;
  • Encourage research in other areas of interest such as limnology, meteorology and upper atmospheric physics to study climate change and predict impacts;
  • Collaborate with local Governments to address the locally-identified climate change
    knowledge gap priorities.
