Back in the Falklands

Stephen Gillanders

I’ve been super excited to be back in the islands for my second field season. It kicked off in September with more invertebrate sampling across the main-lands and outer islands, measuring insect biodiversity and earwig distribution! So far it’s be an amazing season and I’ve made great progress in the coverage of the sampling campaign. As before, I think Falklands is a really nice place to work and I am blessed to get to travel about the islands meeting landowners, visiting farms, and getting to know locals. I’m super proud to be helping document Falklands’ invertebrate biodiversity – which isn’t well documented so far – and also understand how much of an impact earwigs are having on native ecosystems.

One really important aspect of our project that we have developed is a communication survey with which we want to engage as much of the public as possible in our earwig and non-native species research as possible!

We have created a questionnaire where people can give their thoughts and opinions on earwigs and invasive species. It would be such a great help if people participated – totally anonymously! – and to show our appreciation everyone who completes the survey will have multiple chances to win £50!

Not only that, they will help a vital conservation effort, protect our native flora and fauna, and inform management strategies for earwigs. Follow the QR code or link below for survey and more details!
