Environmental Data Solutions (EDS) Centre

Established in September 2013, the IMS-GIS (Information Management System and Geographic Information System) Data Centre has been instrumental in advancing data management, accessibility, and sharing across the South Atlantic UK Overseas Territories. Through sustained engagement with local stakeholders, the Data Centre laid the foundation for a centralised and standardised approach to spatial and environmental data, contributing significantly to the growth of data science and services in the region. Its success has drawn interest from other islands and territories facing similar data challenges.

In 2023, the Centre rebranded as the Environmental Data Solutions (EDS) Centre, marking a new chapter in its evolution. EDS continues to support the Falkland Islands Government (FIG), local organisations, and international initiatives with a solutions-driven approach to GIS and data management. With an expanded suite of tools and services, the Centre empowers data users both locally and globally. In addition to underpinning SAERI’s research, EDS collaborates with visiting scientists and provides independent data collection and analysis for SFL’s commercial projects. These efforts have transformed how spatial and environmental data are accessed and applied, informing decision-making across conservation, policy, and industry.

Kristina joined SAERI as an Environmental Geospatial and UAV Officer in May 2026. She is passionate about using geospatial technology to support multi-agency incident management and improve community resilience.

She holds a PhD in Geospatial Systems and an MRes in Geospatial Data Science from Newcastle University (UK), as well as an MSc in Management Information Systems from Paderborn University (Germany). With more than eight years of experience in GIS-related projects across academia, industry, and government, Kristina has also conducted research at Tohoku University (Japan) and The Ohio State University (USA), using smart IoT data and AI computer vision to assess hazard impacts on transport networks.

As GIS Officer, Kristina supports the Falkland Islands Government’s data infrastructure development, working closely with SAERI’s stakeholders to strengthen geospatial data management in South Atlantic research and explore how real-time data can better support decision-making.

Kristina loves the outdoors and is looking forward to exploring more of the Falklands through its wildlife, landscapes, and hiking trails.
